하남 교산동 마애약사여래좌상 · 河南 校山洞 磨崖藥師如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis carving depicts Bhaisajyaguru, the Buddha of Medicine, said to save all beings from illness, and is cut into the south face of the rock to a total height of 93 cm. An inscription reading "the 29th day of the 7th month of the jeongchuk year, the 2nd year of Taeping" shows that it was made in the 2nd year of King Gyeongjong of Goryeo (977). The Buddha has a gentle face, and the robe covers only the left shoulder, with the folds rendered in neat, even lines. The left hand, palm upward, holds a medicine bowl, while the right hand faces palm-outward with the fingers pointing upward. The halo behind the body is carved in stepped tiers marking off the head halo and the body halo, surrounded by a flame pattern. The pedestal consists of a lower stone carved with downward-facing lotus petals, a middle stone formed of four short pillars, and, above these, a fully opened five-petalled lotus supporting the Buddha's body. This Buddha, in relatively good condition, retains a clear record of the date it was made, and is valued as important material for the study of early Goryeo Buddhist sculpture.
