안성 봉업사지 석조여래입상 · 安城 奉業寺址 石造如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOriginally standing at the Bongeopsa Temple site, the statue was moved to Jugsan Middle School and later relocated again to Chiljangsa Temple in Anseong, Gyeonggi-do, which the monk Jajang had founded in the 5th year of Queen Seondeok (636). The statue and its halo were carved from the same block of stone; the figure itself is 1.57 m tall, with a total height of 1.98 m. The eyes, nose and mouth are severely worn, and the robe covers both shoulders. The folds of the robe form several rounded layers that flow naturally, and below them the skirt forms a zigzag pattern between the legs. In overall bodily proportion the hands are somewhat large, but the proportions of the head and shoulder width are relatively good. On the back of the statue is a halo symbolising the light radiating from the whole body, its edge carved with a flame pattern. The broad shoulders, well-developed bodily forms, U-shaped robe folds and other carving techniques allow this statue to be highly valued as evidence of the regional sculptural style that was popular here in the early Goryeo period.
