Stone Standing Buddha Triad in Sinhang-ri, Yeongdong
영동 신항리 석조여래삼존입상 · 永同 新項里 石造如來三尊立像

This standing stone Buddha triad dates from the Unified Silla period and originally stood at the site of the former Seogeunsa Temple; it now stands within a pavilion roofed only with tiles. Carved on a rectangular, flat stone, the image takes the form of a triad (samjonbul), with the main Buddha at the centre flanked by standing bodhisattvas on either side. The main Buddha has a small, topknot-shaped protrusion (yukgye) atop a bald head, and a round face bearing a smile. The thick robe, wrapped around both shoulders, forms a U-shape at the chest, with a ▽-shaped sash knot between the folds. Below the right hand, the drapery lines flow down as three incised strands. The bodhisattvas on either side are each shown either clasping an object with both hands or standing with hands joined in prayer. This triad, whose upright yet elegant shoulders and dignified build show old-style features throughout, is considered, together with the Taean Rock-carved Buddha Triad, to carry on the style of seventh-century stone Buddhas, and is regarded as a notable work of the late seventh to early eighth century.
