Gilt-bronze Seated Bodhisattva at Unjangam Hermitage, Cheongyang
청양 운장암 금동관음보살좌상 · 靑陽 雲藏庵 金銅觀音菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis image, which had stood beside the road in the valley in front of Unjangam Hermitage, was moved here for safekeeping around 1900 when the hermitage was rebuilt. The hair is gathered up into a topknot, and the figure wears a crown decorated with a flame motif that was added recently. A few locks of hair hang down in front of and behind the shoulders. The face has a well-balanced volume, with the eyes, nose and mouth in good harmony, and the shoulders begin just below the face. The three creases (samdo) carved on the neck extend down to the upper chest. The folds of the robe flow softly and are rendered carefully even on the back of the figure. The chest bears ornate decoration, and above the waist is a sash knot tying the undergarment. The right hand, raised to chest height, has the thumb and ring finger touching, while the left hand has the thumb and middle finger touching, forming the hand gesture of Amitabha Buddha. This bodhisattva shows a style similar to the gilt-bronze bodhisattva of Daeseungsa Temple, suggesting that it was made in the late Goryeo to early Joseon period. In particular, among the objects found inside the statue were Buddhist scriptures printed during the reign of King Jungjong, which provide important evidence for estimating the date of its making.
