This is an iron seated statue of the Buddha Vairocana enshrined in Bogwangjeon Hall of Namjangsa Temple, Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province; only the body of the statue now survives. The face is elegant, and the long ears, reaching almost to the shoulders, harmonise well with the three lines (samdo, a traditional feature carved into a Buddha's neck) carved there, lending the figure a sense of dignity. The robe draped over both shoulders flows smoothly down to cover both knees; the folds appear only at the ends of the arms and legs, having been boldly omitted and simplified elsewhere. The hands are held with the right index finger wrapped by the left hand, a position that differs from that seen in typical Vairocana statues. The solemn facial expression, the knotted sash at the waist, the U-shaped hem of the robe draped over the left shoulder, the elegant face and the imposing physique all indicate that this is a statue from the early Joseon period, and it is highly regarded as a valuable example of an iron Buddhist statue from that era.
