Stone Buddha in Bukji-ri, Bonghwa
봉화 북지리 석조반가상 · 奉化 北枝里 石造半跏像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis piece originally stood beside a rock-carved seated Buddha in Bukji-ri and was moved to Kyungpook National University in 1966. Although the upper body has broken away and is lost, leaving only the lower body and a separate stone footrest carved with a round lotus pattern, the surviving portion, standing about 1.6 m, displays accomplished carving technique. The upper body appears to have been left bare, and the robe rendered on the lower body is very thin. The right leg, raised onto the left knee, is depicted very large, with the knee emphasised by being raised high. Beneath the raised leg, the robe falls in three gently flowing tiers with clearly defined lines. Beside these are a large square ring and an elaborate beaded ornament. The reverse of the image is carved simply, with only the robe folds shown, indicating that the carving was concentrated on the front. The footrest is a disc roughly 70 cm across, carved with seven downward-facing lotus petals. In its style — the position of the left hand, the swelling of the right knee, the realistic robe folds and the elaborate beaded ornament — this half-cross-legged image displays outstanding carving technique. It is regarded overall as a dignified, volumetric work with a distinctive and realistic manner of expression, dating from the mid-7th century.
