This Lotus Sutra (eonhae), Volumes 1 and 4, is a representative scripture of Mahayana Buddhism. Taking as its base text Kumarajiva's Chinese translation as annotated by Gyehwan and further glossed by Iryeo, King Sejo himself added grammatical particles (gugyeol) to the text, and Yun Sa-ro and others translated it at the Gangyeongdogam, printing it from woodblocks in 1463, the ninth year of King Sejo, as a vernacular edition of the sutra. It is valued both as a precious example of vernacular translation that carried forward and developed the tradition of Jeongeum, the original Hangul script, and as a work that fully preserves the formal characteristics of editions produced at the Gangyeongdogam. As an extremely valuable source for the study of medieval Korean language and early Joseon printing, it holds great academic significance for research into Buddhist bibliography and medieval Korean, and most surviving copies of this edition have accordingly been designated as treasures.
