Celadon Lidded Bowl with Incised Cloud and Dragon Design and Inscription of "Sangyakguk (Bureau of Medicine)"
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This celadon lidded bowl, made in the Goryeo period, stands 9.3 cm high, with a mouth diameter of 7 cm and a base diameter of 5.5 cm. The inscription "Sangyakguk" suggests that it was used as a container for medicine. The top of the lid is flat, stepping down in a rounded tier below. A cloud-and-dragon design is incised on the very top, and along the outer edge, where the lid meets the base, the characters "Sangyakguk", the office in charge of medicine in the Goryeo period, are incised horizontally on both parts. The bowl is covered in a transparent celadon glaze, with fine crackle covering the entire surface. It appears to predate the general adoption of the inlay (sanggam) technique, yet the finely incised cloud-and-dragon design on the lid, the neat form of the vessel and the clarity of the glaze make it an outstanding work.
