Portrait of Sixteen Patriarchs in Songgwangsa Temple, Suncheon
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

These are portraits of National Preceptor Bojo Jinul and sixteen eminent monks in all who were active around Songgwangsa Temple in the late Goryeo period. Sixteen paintings were originally designated, but the whereabouts of thirteen of them are unknown, and only three are currently held at Songgwangsa Temple. The portrait of National Preceptor Bojo measures 77.4 cm in width and 134.8 cm in height; all sixteen appear identical in scale and technique, suggesting they were painted by the same artist. With National Preceptor Bojo seated facing right at the centre, seven figures stand facing the centre on his left and eight on his right. National Preceptor Bojo is shown wearing a green jangsam robe with a red gasa, a monk's outer vestment, over it, holding a staff in his right hand; the folds of the robes are outlined in line and shaded with gradations of colour, giving a soft, stable impression. Enshrined in 1780, the fourth year of King Jeongjo, these portraits are in good condition and may be regarded as important works revealing the technique of mid-Joseon Buddhist portrait painting.
