Portrait of State Preceptor Daegak (Uicheon) in Seonamsa Temple, Suncheon
순천 선암사 대각국사 의천 진영 · 順天 仙巖寺 大覺國師 義天 眞影

This is a portrait of Uicheon, a monk of the Goryeo period. State Preceptor Daegak, Uicheon (1055–1101), was the fourth son of King Munjong of Goryeo, who founded the Cheontae school in an effort to unify Buddhism. Painted in colour on silk measuring 110.2 cm wide and 144 cm high, the portrait shows him seated in a chair, looking to the right. His left hand grips a long staff, while his right hand, wearing a short prayer-bead bracelet on the wrist, grasps the armrest of the chair. His pensive gaze, broad forehead, large nose and ears, and tightly closed mouth convey his learning and his bearing as a practitioner. He wears a green kasaya, its knot replaced by a round golden ring. The portrait was retouched and restored in 1805, the fifth year of King Sunjo, by the monk-painter Doil Bigu, and is a representative work of its period that reveals the stylistic features of an earlier age; its value is further enhanced by an inscription by Hyegeun. There are stains caused by moisture and some flaking at folded sections, but the overall state of preservation is good.
