This is a painting of the mountain retreat of Jeong Yeo-chang (1450–1504), a civil official of the early Joseon period, set in Jirisan Mountain. Jeong Yeo-chang passed the state examination in 1483, the 14th year of King Seongjong, and went on to hold various official posts. Regretting that the retreat where Jeong Yeo-chang had once stayed while studying Neo-Confucianism and the Five Classics was falling into disrepair, the Jeong clan invited Yi Jing to paint it. Measuring 56 cm across and 89 cm high, the work is painted on a silk ground. The title, Hwagaehyeon gujangdo, is written in seal script at the top of the composition, and the middle of the scene shows the mountains and waters around the retreat rendered in light colours. The overall composition is weighted to the right, with the near, middle and far grounds clearly distinguished, and the mountains and rocks show a marked contrast of black and white. Below the painting are poems by Jeong Yeo-chang and Yu Ho-in together with a note on the background to its production, as well as passages excerpted from writings by Jo Sik and Jeong Gu. Painted in 1643, the 21st year of King Injo, this is a kind of record painting, made not from direct observation but based on written accounts. It clearly shows the painting style of An Gyeon as it continued into the 17th century, and because its date of production is certain, it is an important resource for the study of the An Gyeon style as well as a valuable source for research into Confucian culture of the Joseon period.
