Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA jeon-jeopsi is a low dish whose rim is turned outward horizontally. This dish, 1.9 cm in height, 16 cm in mouth diameter, and 9.1 cm in base diameter, shows the typical form of an early Joseon jeon-jeopsi, but unusually has a small, shallow circular depression at the centre of its interior base, suggesting it may have been used as a cup stand. Inside this circle is the inscription "Mangudae," and around it two clumps of wild chrysanthemums are painted with concise, skilful brushwork, with a bee flying towards the flowers above, giving the piece a lyrical feel. The turned rim is decorated with small circles, and a white porcelain glaze tinged with pale blue is spread evenly over the fine, pure white clay body. It is presumed to have been made in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, from the late 15th century to the first half of the 16th century. It is a rare work in which a clean, fine porcelain body is well matched with a modest underglaze cobalt-blue design.
