White Porcelain Brush Container with Floral Design in Underglaze Cobalt Blue
백자 청화초화문 필통 · 白磁 靑畵草花文 筆筒

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a piece of stationery from the late Joseon period, used to hold paper, measuring 16 cm in height, 13.1 cm in mouth diameter, and 12.6 cm in base diameter. It is cylindrical in shape, its exterior simple yet dignified. A single blue line encircles the body above the foot at the bottom, and above it, three clumps of orchids in full bloom are painted in plain yet refined brushwork, one in each of three places. The orchid design, rendered in bright blue, gives an even cleaner, more understated feel. The glaze is a white glaze tinged with pale blue, applied evenly over the whole surface. Judging from the character of the glaze and the blue-painted design, it appears to have been made in the first half of the 18th century at the Geumsa-ri kiln in Gwangju, or slightly later at the Bunwon-ri kiln. Among containers for holding paper made in the Gwangju region of Gyeonggi-do in the late Joseon period, this is the finest example in terms of form, design, and glazing.
