백자 철화끈무늬 병 · 白磁 鐵畵垂紐文 甁

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a white porcelain wine bottle of the Joseon period, decorated with a striped design in a black pigment; it stands 31.4 cm high, with a mouth diameter of 7 cm and a base diameter of 10.6 cm. The mouth flares outward like a trumpet and curls over, the neck is slender and constricted, and the body gradually widens, forming a bulging shape in the lower section. For the design, a string was first painted in blue, wound around the neck with its strands trailing down and curling into circular loops; over this, a black pigment was applied with a supple brush in varying tones, giving an elegant, atmospheric effect. The foot is tall and wide, and Hangul characters are inscribed on the inner base of the foot. Iron-painted (cheolhwa) white porcelain of the Joseon period began to be produced from the latter half of the 15th century, but examples from the 15th–16th centuries are rare. This bottle dates from around the latter half of the 16th century, and is valuable not only for its rarity but also, with its unusual design of a string tied around the neck and trailing downward, stands as a representative work of the early Joseon period.
