This medical text was compiled in 1613, the fifth year of King Gwanghaegun, by Heo Jun (1546-1615) for the treatment of onyeok, an epidemic fever presumed to have been typhus, transmitted by lice. When an outbreak of onyeok occurred in the Gwanbuk region from the autumn of 1612 through the following spring and spread across the country, King Gwanghaegun ordered Heo Jun to devise countermeasures, and Heo Jun accordingly wrote this book, recording the causes and treatment of the disease, the names of medicinal materials, methods of cure, and things to avoid. The book brought together the achievements of treatises on epidemic fever that had developed since the Bunmun onyeok ihaebang, published during the reign of King Jungjong, and it greatly influenced the writing of medical texts for combating epidemics in late Joseon. Of the copies of the Sinchan byeogonbang held at Kyujanggak, three are designated as treasures, all being the same edition printed at the Naeuiwon in 1613. The records of royal bestowal on the inside of the covers show that these copies were kept respectively at Odaesansago, the Gyoseogwan (the government publishing office), and the Hongmungwan (the Office of Special Advisors).
