Three-story Stone Pagoda of Naewonsa Temple, Sancheong
산청 덕산사 삼층석탑 · 山淸 德山寺 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands in front of the Daeungjeon Hall of Deoksansa Temple, its three-storey body raised on a two-tiered foundation. Carvings imitating pillar shapes are clearly visible on the surfaces of the foundation and the body stones, though the pagoda has been badly damaged by fire. The thin, flat roof stones each have four tiers of supports on the underside, and the eaves, otherwise level, rise sharply at the four corners. The form of the roof stones indicates that the pagoda was built in the late Unified Silla period, making it valuable material for studying the pagoda styles of the time. Based on a combination of roof tiles excavated during a trial excavation (October–November 2020) and roof tiles already held by the temple, it was confirmed that the present-day "Naewonsa" occupies the former temple site of "Deoksansa," and that the name "Naewonsa," used in the previous official designation, was simply the name given to the temple founded on the site of "Deoksansa" in 1959. In light of these findings, the official designation was changed on 29 September 2021 to Three-story Stone Pagoda of Deoksansa Temple, Sancheong.
