Seonamsa Temple was founded by Doseon in 875, the fifth year of King Heongang of Unified Silla, and was extensively rebuilt in 1088, the sixth year of King Seonjong of Goryeo, by Uicheon. This stupa is said to have given its name to Daegagam Hermitage, so called because State Preceptor Daegak Uicheon attained great enlightenment at the hermitage attached to Seonamsa Temple. It is a typical octagonal stupa, in which a body was set on a base formed of three pedestal stones and topped with a finial. On the base, the lower stone is carved on its sides with cloud patterns, while the middle stone bears one shallow ansang (an arch-shaped decorative niche) lightly carved on each face. The upper stone is ringed with eight lotus petals. The body of the stupa has pillar shapes carved at each corner, and the front and back faces are carved with door panels fitted with locks. The roof stone is flat and plain, with thick, heavy ridges on its sloping faces, each ending in a large, boldly raised flower ornament. At the very top, the finial consists in sequence of a borun (a wheel-shaped ornament) and a boju (a lotus-bud-shaped ornament). Judging from the carving technique and the shape of the roof stone, the stupa is thought to be a work of the early Goryeo period.
