Daegwangjeon Hall of Sinheungsa Temple, Yangsan
양산 신흥사 대광전 · 梁山 新興寺 大光殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaegwangjeon Hall enshrines a statue of Vairocana Buddha and serves as the main worship hall of Sinheungsa Temple. Records discovered during a partial dismantling and repair in 1988 show that it was built in 1657, the eighth year of King Hyojong of Joseon. The hall measures three bays across the front and three bays to the side, and its roof is a gable roof that takes the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. The bracket sets supporting the eaves, decoratively carved, follow the dapo style, in which brackets are placed both above the columns and between them. Although the building was constructed in the mid-Joseon period, its construction techniques strongly display features characteristic of the early Joseon period. Murals of Buddhas, guardian deities, flowers and other subjects appear on the inner and outer faces of the side walls and of the panel walls at the front and back; most were painted in the mid-17th century, though some appear to date from the 18th century. Inside the hall a variety of dancheong (traditional decorative colouring) survives from the time of construction, its colours and patterns of very high quality.
