Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha in Geumbong-ri, Seongju
성주 금봉리 석조비로자나불좌상 · 星州 金鳳里 石造毘盧遮那佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone seated Vairocana Buddha, made in the late Silla period, gives form to Vairocana Buddha, who is said to preside over the entire world of truth, and is complete with both a pedestal and a mandorla. On the head is a broad, topknot-shaped ushnisha, and the face is round with a composed, dignified expression. The robe, draped over both shoulders on an elegant body, flows softly downward, and the high knees give the figure a settled, stable appearance. The hand gesture, with the right hand wrapped around the index finger of the left, is the typical mudra taken by Vairocana Buddha. The mandorla, which represents the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is divided into a head halo and a body halo: the head halo is carved with lotus patterns, and the body halo is finely carved with flame patterns and small Buddha figures. The pedestal on which the Buddha sits is an octagonal wondang-type pedestal made up of upper, middle and lower tiers, carved with lion and cloud patterns. The drum shape of the middle tier and the lotus patterns carved on the upper and lower tiers show, in their manner of expression, that this work follows the style of the Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha of Biroam Hermitage, Donghwasa Temple, Daegu (a Treasure).
