Rock-carved Standing Buddha in Hwangsang-dong, Gumi
구미 황상동 마애여래입상 · 龜尾 凰顙洞 磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis huge rock-carved standing Buddha is carved into the flat south-eastern face of a massive natural rock. Above the bare head is a large topknot-shaped protuberance (ushnisha), and the facial features are finely and precisely rendered. The ears hang long and the neck bears three folds, giving an impression at once solemn and compassionate. The robe flows smoothly over both arms, its folds running from the chest down to the navel and continuing over each leg in gently curving, bow-shaped lines. The hands are raised to chest height, the left palm turned inward and the right palm turned outward, in the gesture of preaching the Buddhist Law. With its serene expression, finely rendered features and softly flowing robe, this Buddha is judged to be an outstanding work of the Unified Silla period.
