The Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra, often shortened to the 'Diamond Sutra', is the fundamental scripture of Korea's Jogye Order. Its teaching holds that only by cutting through every chain of suffering with a wisdom as hard as diamond can one reach the world of enlightenment. In Korea it is the most widely read Buddhist scripture after the Heart Sutra. This edition was annotated by the Song-dynasty monk Chuanlao, who added interpretive commentary along with verses of praise in poetic form. It was carved onto woodblocks and printed on mulberry paper, and measures 26.6 cm in height and 15.5 cm in width. There are stains suggesting it once lay inside a Buddhist statue, and the edges have been partly damaged by rodent gnawing, though the main text remains in good condition. According to a colophon written by Yi Saek at the end of the book, it was published in 1387, the thirteenth year of King U of Goryeo, at the request of Yu Gu and Gang In-bu to the queen consort of King U; the edition shows that it was based on a Song-dynasty original.
