Bhaisajyaguru Sutra
약사유리광여래본원공덕경 · 藥師瑠璃光如來本願功德經

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Bhaisajyaguru Sutra, also known for short as the Yaksagyeong, is a sutra recited to pray for the healing of illness. This copy is one of the texts published by the Gyojang Dogam, an office set up at Heungwangsa Temple in 1086 to publish the Sokjanggyeong, a supplementary Buddhist canon. It is a single volume printed on mulberry paper, measuring 30 cm in height and 16 cm in width, and below the title is written the character 鞠 (guk), a cheonjaham mark used to number volumes of the Buddhist canon according to the sequence of characters in the Thousand Character Classic. While State Preceptor Daegak Uicheon was publishing the Sokjanggyeong, he suddenly fell ill in 1101, the sixth year of King Sukjong, and passed away that October; this sutra was undertaken, on the basis of the Buddhist canon woodblocks, to pray for his recovery, and was completed in 1102, the seventh year of King Sukjong. Judging from the carving skill, the strokes of the characters and the quality of the paper, which resemble other Joseon-period editions printed from woodblocks re-carved after Goryeo originals, this volume is presumed to have been produced in the early Joseon period.
