Royal Certificate of Meritorious Subject Issued to Won Gyun
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This royal certificate was issued in 1604, the thirty-seventh year of King Seonjo, naming Won Gyun (1540–1597) a meritorious subject. Won Gyun had won a great victory against Japanese forces as Naval Commander of Gyeongsang Right Province during the Imjin War, the Japanese invasions of Korea of 1592–1598, and later, as Tongjesa, the supreme naval commander, he fought bravely against enemy ships during the Jeongyu War, the renewed Japanese invasion of 1597, before dying heroically in battle. The certificate states that, in recognition of his heroic death fighting off the Japanese, his descendants would continue to be cared for, and grants him thirteen slaves, 150 gyeol of land (a traditional unit of land area), ten nyang of silver, one bolt of cloth and one horse. Accompanying the certificate is a chijemun, a memorial address recording that on the eighteenth day of the first month of 1605, the thirty-eighth year of King Seonjo, the king ordered a memorial rite to be held before the spirit tablet of Won Gyun, who had been posthumously honoured with the office of Jwachanseong of the State Council, mourning his death. This certificate is valued as important material for a fresh assessment of General Won Gyun, who rendered great service in repelling the Japanese during the Imjin War.
