This royal edict (wangji) is a document granting merit land (gongjeon) to Jo On (1347–1417), who rendered distinguished service in the First Strife of Princes in 1398, the seventh year of King Taejo of Joseon. Jo On also contributed to the founding of Joseon and was named a second-class Meritorious Subject of Dynastic Founding, and in the Second Strife of Princes he was again recognised for routing the forces of Yi Bang-gan, earning him fourth-class rank among the Meritorious Subjects of Assisting Enthronement. The First Strife of Princes was a conflict over succession to the throne in which Yi Bang-won fought against the faction of his half-brother Yi Bang-seok. Twenty-nine men who distinguished themselves in eliminating Yi Bang-seok's faction were rewarded, divided into two ranks: twelve first-class and seventeen second-class meritorious subjects, with Jo On among the latter. The document records that Jo On was granted 150 gyeol of merit land, together with its location and area. It is a valuable source for identifying the figures who were active in consolidating the power of King Taejong of Joseon.
