The Myobeop yeonhwagyeong, commonly known in short form as the Beophwagyeong, or Lotus Sutra, holds as its central teaching that the path to Buddhahood is open to everyone. As the fundamental sutra of the Cheontae school, it exerted, together with the Hwaeomgyeong, or Flower Garland Sutra, a major influence on the formation of Korean Buddhist thought. This is a Korean translation of the Lotus Sutra as translated into Chinese by Kumārajīva with commentary by Gyehwan and a compilation of annotations by Iryeo; in 1463, the ninth year of King Sejo, the main text and Gyehwan's commentary alone were rendered into Hangul. It was carved onto woodblocks and printed on mulberry paper at the Gangyeongdogam, the office established in 1461, the seventh year of King Sejo, to translate Buddhist scriptures into Hangul and have them published, and it comprises two books: the first of 82 folios, and the second running from folio 82 to folio 202. The book is bound in the pobaejang style, in which the printed sheets are folded in half with the text facing outward, stacked, sewn along the spine and wrapped in a cover. Although only a single volume survives, it is a first printing in good condition, bearing seals at the beginning of both the first and second books that confirm proofreading was carried out.
