Chambeop refers to a Buddhist rite in which sins are confessed while reciting scripture, and when the rite is directed to Amitabha Buddha of the Western Pure Land it is called Mitachambeop. This book records the procedures for the Mitachambeop and was published in 1474, the fifth year of King Seongjong, by Queen Dowager Jeonghui, the widow of King Sejo, to pray for the repose of Queen Gonghye of the Han clan, consort of King Seongjong. It is a woodblock print on mulberry paper, with Volumes 6 to 10 bound together as a single book; it measures 33.4 cm in height and 22 cm in width. A colophon by Kim Su-on at the end of the book reveals that it was published to pray not only for Queen Gonghye but also for the repose of former kings and queens. It also records in detail the positions and names of the renowned monks and members of the royal clan who took part in the carving of the woodblocks, showing that the project was carried out by the royal court as a national undertaking. Because the people mobilised to produce the book were the finest craftsmen of their day, and their positions and names are recorded in such detail, it is regarded as valuable material for the study of the history of woodblock printing technology in Korea.
