KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is Volumes 1-2 of the seven-volume Lotus Sutra printed in April 1470 (the first year of King Seongjong), commissioned by Queen Dowager Jeonghui, King Sejo's consort, to pray for the repose of the deceased King Sejo, King Yejong and Prince Uigyeong. The book was carved by leading engravers of the day, including Gwon Don-il, Go Mal-jong, Jang Mak-dong, Woo In-su, Choi Geum-dong, Lee Yeong-san and Choi Deok-san, and the carving is very refined. Most editions of the Lotus Sutra circulated in Korea carry the commentary of the Chinese monk Gyehwan, but the edition carved on this occasion contains only the original text, made for use in a cheondo rite, a Buddhist ceremony to guide the spirit of the dead to the afterlife. Among the volumes of the same edition already designated - Volumes 3-4 and 5-7 of the Lotus Sutra - the colophon written by Kim Su-on at the end of Volume 7 records the motive and date of publication, making this an extremely valuable resource both for the study of royal Buddhism and for bibliography.
