대방광불화엄경 정원본 권31 · 大方廣佛華嚴經 貞元本 卷三十一

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra), often shortened to the Hwaeomgyeong, holds as its central idea that the Buddha and all sentient beings are not two but one. As the fundamental scripture of the Hwaeom school, it had, together with the Lotus Sutra, an important influence on the establishment of Korean Buddhist thought. This volume is a woodblock edition printed on mulberry paper in an accordion-fold format that opens out like a folding screen, measuring, when folded, 31.6 cm in height and 12.3 cm in width. The dark blue-black cover bears the title written in gold, ending with the character 貞 (jeong), which identifies it as the Zhenyuan version translated into Chinese by the Tang-dynasty monk Prajña. Corresponding to Volume 31 of the forty-volume Zhenyuan version of the Avatamsaka Sutra, this copy was printed from the Goryeo woodblocks of Haeinsa Temple (National Treasure), carved during the reign of King Sukjong of Goryeo; it is thought to date from the thirteenth to fourteenth century.
