The Gogeum unhoe geoyo was originally a rhyme dictionary in thirty volumes compiled by Huang Gongshao of Yuan China, to which Taechung added supplementary notes and commentary. This edition was printed at Gyeongju-bu and Miryang-bu after Sin In-son, who took up the post of provincial governor of Gyeongsang-do in the sixteenth year of King Sejong's reign (1434), learned that the Unhoe geoyo had not yet been published in Korea and reported this to the king. Besides Sin In-son, several officials took part in the publication, including the assistant magistrate Bak Geun and the Gyeongju magistrate Kim Eul-sin, and a total of 109 people were involved in carving the woodblocks, among them more than twenty monks led by the great Seon master Hong Hui and various laypeople led by Lee Jong-saeng. The carving is relatively fine, and the clean printing preserves the characteristics of the original edition. The book is also regarded as an extremely important source for the study of phonology, since it formed the basis for the Dongguk jeongun (Korean Rhyme Dictionary), completed in the twenty-ninth year of King Sejong's reign (1447).
