Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a re-carving, based on the original printing blocks, of the Chunchu jwassi jeon (the Zuozhuan, a commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals), annotated throughout with notes on difficult characters and running commentary by Im Yo-su of Song-dynasty China. It was published in 1431 (the 13th year of King Sejong) by Seo Seon (1367-1433), Provincial Governor of Jeolla-do. The undertaking began in 1430 (the 12th year of King Sejong), when the previous governor, Sin Gae (1373-1446), wishing to publish and widely distribute an edition held in his own family's collection, consulted with the assistant magistrate (dosa) Kim Chi-myeong; that year they announced that the printing blocks would be carved at Geumsan Mountain, while instructing Gu Jae-mo to secure the cooperation of the other counties. Sin Gae, however, was transferred to the post of Inspector-General (Daesaheon) that same year and did not see the work completed; his successor as governor, Seo Seon, took over the publication and finished it in 1431. Carved under the direction of local officials, the engraving is comparatively fine, and as an early printing it clearly preserves the characteristics of the original edition.
