The Hyangyak jesaeng jipseongbang is a book on medicine and pharmacology built around the Samhwaja hyangyakbang, compiled by Kim Hui-seon and others in the Goryeo period, and the Hyangyak ganyeokbang, published by Gwon Jung-hwa in the Joseon period. Drawing on and supplementing these with contemporary medical experience and medical texts, it was completed in 1398, the seventh year of King Taejo, and published the following year by Kim Hui-seon at the Gangwon Provincial Office. This is Volume 6 of the thirty-volume Hyangyak jesaeng jipseongbang, and the set is not complete. The woodblocks also vary somewhat in size, and some parts are missing, so the full content cannot be established in detail. However, Gwon Geun's Yangchonjip and Kim Seong-su's study "A Consideration of the Development of the Bibliography of Korean Medicine" allow the circumstances of its publication and the scope of its prescriptions to be roughly inferred. According to these, the complete thirty volumes record the symptoms of 338 kinds of disease and 2,803 prescriptions; they give a general account of the medical experience of the time, then present prescriptions by category of disease with accompanying explanations. This Hyangyak jesaeng jipseongbang is especially valuable, both because it formed the basis for the Hyangyak jipseongbang published in 1433, the fifteenth year of King Sejong, and because it developed and applied native remedies suited to Korea's own climate and constitution, using medicinal herbs that grow naturally in the country.
