Buryeongsa Temple is said to have been founded by the great monk Uisang in 651, the fifth year of Queen Jindeok of Silla. Daeungbojeon Hall refers to the main worship hall of a temple in which an image of Sakyamuni Buddha is enshrined, and the present building, based on the records of the Buddhist paintings inside, is thought to have been built in 1725, the first year of King Yeongjo. It measures three bays across both the front and the sides, and the roof, seen from the side, is a hip-and-gable roof in the shape of the character 八 (eight). The bracket structure, decoratively assembled to support the eaves, is set both above the columns and between them, in the dapo, or multi-cluster bracket, style, and the carving of each bracket set is outstanding. The most notable feature is the dancheong, the coloured decorative painting on the building: the exterior has been repainted and has lost its original appearance, but the interior retains its original form well. The painting techniques used on the ceiling, the walls, and the thick structural timbers supporting the building are judged to be of a very high standard. It is a late Joseon building that provides valuable material for the study of architectural styles and techniques, as well as for research into refined Buddhist paintings and dancheong decoration.
