This is a gwaebul, a huge Buddhist painting hung outdoors during great dharma assemblies and rites, depicting Sakyamuni Buddha alone. Measuring 4.5 metres wide and 9 metres tall, it shows Sakyamuni standing facing forward, filling the enormous picture surface. He is adorned as splendidly as a bodhisattva, wearing a jewelled crown on his head. His face is comparatively full, with small, slender features set in a dignified expression, and his powerful build and feet planted wide apart make a strong impression. His robe, in vivid contrasting green and red, gives a somewhat weighty effect, and the circular ornaments and floral patterns in particular make the painting appear all the more magnificent and finely wrought. Painted in 1725, the first year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, the work is somewhat faded overall and has some areas of loss, but it remains in generally good condition, and ranks among the representative gwaebul of its period depicting Sakyamuni Buddha in the splendid guise of a bodhisattva.
