This is a portrait of Kim Jin, pen name Cheonggye (1500-?), measuring 109 cm wide and 142 cm tall. Kim Jin was a Joseon scholar who passed the state examination in 1525, the twentieth year of King Jungjong, and rose to the post of Minister of Personnel. Painted in colour on ramie cloth, the portrait shows him seated facing right, his hands clasped together inside his sleeves. He wears a tall, wide-brimmed jeollip, a felt hat, and a green robe. His face is rendered with only a few lines and his eyes are drawn very narrow; his contemplative expression and the overall mood of the painting suggest the bearing of a scholar. The tiger-skin cushion on which he sits has little sense of volume and is very flat, yet the painting does not look awkward for it. A distinctive feature is the use not only of black ink lines but also of brown and red lines in places. Painted in 1572, the fifth year of King Seonjo, this portrait depicts its subject accurately and conveys his character and dignified bearing well. Together with the portrait of Yi Hyeon-bo, it is a valuable work representing the portraits of the sadaebu, the scholar-official class, of the Andong region.
