분청사기 음각연화문 편병 · 粉靑沙器 陰刻蓮花文 扁甁

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a pyeonbyeong, a flat bottle with two flattened sides, made during the Joseon period. It stands 20.5 cm high, with a mouth diameter of 5.0 cm and a base diameter of 8.3 cm. The bottle was first thrown round on the wheel and then beaten flat at the front and back. The body is full and rounded, and coated relatively thickly with white slip. Around the mouth runs a band of lotus design; the flat front and back panels of the body each bear a lotus motif, and grass motifs are incised on the sides. A pale green glaze has melted evenly over the entire surface and is transparent. The foot is high and flares slightly outward, giving the piece a sense of stability. As a work of the Joseon period, it is an important example in which abundant volume and decoration are well matched.
