Hyangyak jesaeng jipseongbang (Collection of Native Prescriptions for Saving Lives), Volumes 4-5
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a book on medicine and pharmacology, compiled around the Samhwaja hyangyakbang, gathered by Kim Hui-seon and others in the Goryeo period, and the Hyangyak ganyeokbang, published by Gwon Jung-hwa in the Joseon period, supplemented and cross-checked with contemporary medical experience and medical texts; it was published in 1398, the seventh year of King Taejo, and printed the following year by Kim Hui-seon in Gangwon-do. This is a facsimile reprint of volumes 4 and 5 out of the 30 volumes of the Hyangyak jesaeng jipseongbang, and does not constitute a complete set. Volume 4 lacks the first nine of its 44 leaves (leaves 1-9), and Volume 5 lacks the last four (leaves 41-44); there are also slight differences in the number of characters and the layout between the two, Volume 4 having 24 characters in 12 columns and Volume 5 having 22 characters in 12 columns. According to Gwon Geun's Yangchonjip and Kim Seong-su's study on the development of Korean medical bibliography, the circumstances of the book's publication and the scope of the prescriptions it contains can be broadly inferred. It is said that the full 30 volumes recorded the symptoms of 338 kinds of disease together with 2,803 prescriptions, first giving a general account of contemporary medical experience and then presenting the prescriptions by category of disease with accompanying explanations. The Hyangyak jesaeng jipseongbang is of particularly high value, not only because it formed the basis for the Hyangyak jipseongbang, published in 1433, the fifteenth year of King Sejong, but also because it developed and applied native remedies made from herbs growing wild in Korea, suited to the country's climate and the constitution of its people. This copy is in somewhat better condition in terms of printing than Volume 6 (Treasure).
