The Gugeup ganibang is a work of traditional Korean medicine written in the Korean vernacular script (hangeul), compiling emergency prescriptions so that they could be used by ordinary people. It was compiled by Yun Ho, Im Won-jun and others at the king's command and published as a woodblock edition in 1489, the twentieth year of King Seongjong of Joseon. This copy is book 1 of Volume 6 from a set of 8 volumes later reprinted with movable type. Diseases are divided into 127 categories, including stroke and headache, with prescriptions for their treatment gathered together, all translated into hangeul and compiled so that anyone could easily understand them. The first edition of this book does not survive; only a second edition survives, carved by tracing over an Eulhaeja movable-type printing. However, even the surviving second edition is incomplete, with only five volumes and five books -- volumes 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 -- remaining. These are not from the same printing, but they are undoubtedly editions published before the Japanese invasions of 1592-98. As a rare medical text written in hangeul, this book is regarded as a very important resource not only for research into the history of printing related to medical texts, but also for research into the Korean language.
