Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Lotus Sutra (Myobeop yeonhwagyeong), also known by its shortened name Beophwagyeong, holds as its central teaching that the path to Buddhahood is open to everyone. As the fundamental scripture of the Cheontae school, it exerted, together with the Hwaeomgyeong (Avatamsaka Sutra), an important influence on the establishment of Buddhist thought in Korea. It was published using as its base text the Chinese translation made by Kumarajiva of the Later Qin. It is a woodblock-printed edition on mulberry paper; the surviving Volumes 3 and 4 of the original seven volumes were bound together as a single book in the pobaejang style, in which a cover wraps around the outside of the bound pages. It was published in the first year of King Seongjong of Joseon (1470), when Queen Dowager Jaseong of the Yun clan, consort of King Sejo, had it made to pray for the repose of her second son, King Yejong, who had died, and together with him for the repose of King Sejo and her eldest son, King Deokjong. Not only is the book in good condition, but pobaejang bindings of this kind are also rare in Korea, making it a valuable resource.
