Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Surangama Sutra, also known in short form as the Daebuljeong Suneungeomgyeong or simply the Neungeomgyeong, holds as its central teaching that the Buddha's words should not merely be understood intellectually but personally experienced and realised. This is Volumes 1 to 4 of the Neungeomgyeong as summarised and annotated by Gyehwan of Song China, with the four volumes bound together as a single book. It is a woodblock print on paper, published in 1488, the nineteenth year of King Seongjong of Joseon, at Muryangsa Temple in Hongsan, Chungcheong Province, with the calligraphy written by Bak Gyeong and funded by donations including that of the magistrate of Hongsan-hyeon. Produced at a temple in the late fifteenth century, it reproduces calligraphy by a noted master calligrapher of the day, and a record relating to its publication survives at the end of the volume, making it a valuable resource. It is also valuable for the study of the history of the Korean language, since it carries grammatical glosses (to) in both hangeul and idu (a system for writing Korean using Chinese characters), offering a view of medieval Korean.
