Between 1328 and 1337, Wi Yeok-rim, a medical professor from Nanfeng in Yuan China, compiled a medical text gathering remedies used to treat patients across five successive generations of his family, beginning with his great-great-grandfather. This text was recarved and printed using movable type in 1425, the 7th year of King Sejong of Joseon; the present item is one book containing Volumes 10-11 from the original set of 20 volumes in 22 books. Seui deukhyobang was published in the second month of 1425, the 7th year of King Sejong, by the magistrate of Chuncheon, modelled on the Yuan edition, in a total of 20 volumes in 22 books. It was widely read as a textbook and lecture material for medical examinations; the text is said to have been divided into eight departments and 276 sections across 19 volumes, to which a further work, Sonjinin's Yangsaengbeopjeolmun, was appended to make a total of 20 volumes. This item is an incomplete set (yeongbon) consisting only of Volumes 10 and 11: Volume 10 contains ten sections including headache and facial disease, and Volume 11 contains 22 sections including Hwaryuron (On Nurturing Infants) and Choseang (Newborn Care). Printed with gapjinja movable type, the Sejong-era edition is held in the Japanese Cabinet Library (Naikaku Bunko), and gapjinja-type editions are held in the Imperial Household Agency Library and the Osaka Prefectural Library in Japan, and in Taiwan; no copy had previously been known to survive in Korea. Although it consists of only one book containing two of the original 20 volumes, it is a rare medical text in Korea and is highly valuable as material for medical research and bibliographical study.
