The Jabi doryang chambeop is a Buddhist ritual text in which sins are repented while reciting the sutra; performing this rite was believed to bring divine efficacy, dispelling sin and bringing blessings. It further embodies a wish to save the souls of the dead, guiding them to paradise and freeing them from suffering. This book comprises volumes 9 and 10 of a ten-volume set that eminent monks recompiled and corrected after errors had crept into the text of the Jabi doryang chambeop through generations of transmission. It is a woodblock print, with the two volumes bound together as a single book. The blocks were originally carved in 1447, the twenty-ninth year of King Sejong, by the son of Kim Gu-deok and the royal concubine Myeongbin, known as Seorwolheonin, among others, to pray for the repose of King Taejong, Queen Wongyeong, Queen Soheon and their own parents; this copy was printed from those blocks in 1462, the eighth year of King Sejo, at the Gangyeong Dogam, an office set up in 1461, the seventh year of King Sejo, to translate Buddhist sutras into Hangeul and publish them. This book is valuable not only for helping to date similar printed editions but also for the study of early Joseon Buddhist ritual and the nature of the Gangyeong Dogam.
