The Hanging Painting of the Buddha Triad at Chiljangsa Temple depicts Sakyamuni Buddha preaching on Vulture Peak, in the form of a Yeongsanhoesangdo, a painting of the Vulture Peak Assembly. The composition is divided into a lower section centred on Sakyamuni Buddha and an upper section containing Rocana Buddha and Amitabha Buddha. Sakyamuni Buddha, who has a rectangular halo, is surrounded by the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, the Ten Great Disciples, the Four Heavenly Kings and others. Below the pedestal, Sariputra listens to Sakyamuni's sermon. In the upper section, Amitabha Buddha and Rocana Buddha — who wears an ornate crown like a bodhisattva — are surrounded by bodhisattvas. A treasure pagoda is placed between Amitabha Buddha and Rocana Buddha to divide the composition, and above the pagoda, within a large semicircular halo, the heavenly world is depicted around nine bodhisattvas. Painted in 1710, the thirty-sixth year of King Sukjong, this hanging painting has a distinctive composition in which the lower section alone, depicting Sakyamuni Buddha, can stand as a complete Vulture Peak Assembly, while combined with the upper section it forms a simplified representation of the Three Buddha Bodies. This simplified compositional method was popular in the late Joseon period, and this hanging painting is an outstanding example of that style.
