Tarubi Stele, Yeosu
여수 타루비 · 麗水 墮淚碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele was erected to honour the virtue of Yi Sun-sin, a great general of the mid-Joseon period. "Tarubi" means "stele that brings tears," a name drawn from a Chinese story in which the people of Yangyang would weep whenever they looked upon a stele set up in memory of Yang Hu. The stele consists of a square base stone, an upright body, and a capstone. The base stone is carved with floral patterns, the capstone is covered with cloud designs, and a large boju (a finial ornament shaped like a lotus bud) rises prominently at the top. The inscription bears the name "Tarubi" in large characters on the front, with the reason for the name and the date of erection recorded below. The stele was erected in 1603, the thirty-sixth year of King Seonjo, five years after General Yi Sun-sin's death.
