Daeak hubo is a musical score in seven volumes and seven books, compiled on thick paper in 1759, the thirty-fifth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, by Seo Myeong-eung, who gathered together the music of the reign of King Sejo. It measures 31.4cm in width and 44.5cm in height. Daeak jeonbo, which had compiled twenty-two pieces of music from the reign of King Sejong, was lost during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895) and does not survive. Volume 1 of this book contains "Sogak boseo" from the reign of King Sejo along with eight other pieces; volume 2 contains "Siyong bo Taepyeongdo" and one other piece; volume 3 contains Siyong hyangakbo and two other pieces; volume 4 contains Siyong hyangakbo and one other piece; volume 5 contains Siyong hyangakbo and four other pieces; volume 6 contains Siyong hyangakbo and five other pieces; and volume 7 contains "Dongdong" and three other pieces. The pieces recorded in volumes 5 through 7 are especially precious, being scores from the late Goryeo or early Joseon period. Although compiled in the eighteenth century, this score is highly valued as a historical source: it is the first musical score compiled independently by a government office separate from the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty; it contains music from a range of periods including the reign of King Sejo; and it records diverse native hyangak pieces handed down from Goryeo, such as Jeongeup, together with the early forms of jeongak (court music) pieces that went through varied changes and development up to the late Joseon period.
