Three-story Stone Pagoda of Silleuksa Temple, Jecheon
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This pagoda stands at Silleuksa Temple, its three-story body raised on a two-tier foundation. The foundation has a pilaster carved at the corner and centre of each side, and the body stones likewise have pilasters carved at each corner. The roof stones have four tiers of eave supports on the underside at every story; the sloping surfaces that shed rainwater are gently inclined and curve up slightly at the four corners. At the top, the finial is fitted with a noban (base plate), bokbal (inverted-bowl ornament), anghwa (lotus-shaped ornament), borun (wheel-shaped ornament), and bogae (a roof-shaped canopy ornament), with a pointed chalju, the central pole supporting the weight of the finial, set at its centre. This early Goryeo pagoda faithfully carries on the stone pagoda style of Unified Silla; it is a rare example in which the finial has survived so intact, and each part appears to have been made with refined skill. When the pagoda was dismantled and restored in 1981, 108 miniature clay pagodas and fragments of a reliquary were found inside the foundation.
