This text was compiled by the Tang-dynasty Chinese monk Hyeongak (647–713), setting out the essential principles of Seon (Zen) Buddhism together with his understanding gained through meditative practice. In Korea, it was first obtained during the Goryeo period by the monk Hyegeun of Hoeamsa Temple; his disciple Hwonseon, with the help of Yi Bang-jik, had it published at Cheongnyongsa Temple in Chungju in the spring of 1381, the seventh year of King U of Goryeo. In 1472, the third year of King Seongjong of Joseon, when Queen Dowager Insu had a number of Buddhist scriptures printed to pray for the repose of the souls of King Sejo, King Yejong, and Crown Prince Uigyeong, and for the long life of Grand Queen Dowager Jeonghui, the reigning king, and the queen, two hundred copies of this book were printed among them. Printed using both woodblock and movable metal type, this copy has survived in its original form, and it is valued as an important source for the history of Buddhism and of printing culture in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods.
