Three-story Stone Pagoda of Boansa Temple, Goesan
괴산 보안사 삼층석탑 · 槐山 寶安寺 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone pagoda stands beside the north wall of Boansa Temple. It consists of a three-story body set on a single-tier base, with the corners of the base carved to resemble pillars. On the south face of the first-story body is a simply carved niche (gamsil), a small chamber for enshrining a Buddha image. Among the stone pagodas found in the Chungbuk region, examples with a niche carved into the body are rare, making this an unusual style. The pagoda survives in relatively complete condition, with none of its parts damaged, and the well-balanced body gives an impression of stability. The reduction of the roof-stone eave supports to three tiers and their blunt, rounded carving, together with the incomplete and simplified treatment of the base, suggest that the pagoda was built in the late Goryeo period.
