Transcription of the Diamond Sutra, the Lotus Sutra, and
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This was transcribed in 1371, the twentieth year of King Gongmin of Goryeo, through the sponsorship of the Buddhist nuns Myoji and Myosu. At the beginning of the scroll are frontispiece illustrations in gold ink, of a composition different from typical sutra frontispieces: a Buddha image flanked by attendant bodhisattvas, and an image of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. These are followed by the transcribed texts of the Diamond Sutra, the twenty-fifth chapter of the Lotus Sutra on the Universal Gate of Avalokiteshvara, and the Vow of Master Yeongga. At the end of the scroll is a colophon reading, "recorded in the seventh month of the sinhae year, the fourth year of the Hongwu era; sponsored by the nun Myoji, joined in the vow by the nun Myosu," which reveals both the sponsors and the date of transcription. In keeping with a taboo-avoidance practice found only in Goryeo-period editions, the character 武 in the era name has its final downward stroke omitted, because it coincided with the personal name of King Hyejong. The calligraphy is written in the Yan Zhenqing style commonly used in the late Goryeo period, and it is a valuable source for examining an aspect of Buddhist faith at the time.
