Rock-carved Standing Bodhisattva in Soraesan Mountain, Siheung
시흥 소래산 마애보살입상 · 始興 蘇萊山 磨崖菩薩立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe rock-carved image on Soraesan Mountain depicts a standing Buddha incised in thin lines, carved onto a rock known as Janggunbawi (General Rock). It wears a round, hat-shaped crown carved with patterns, with small, narrow crown ribbons fluttering to the sides. On the neck, the samdo — the three folds symbolising the three realms — are carved like a thick band, and on the chest an inner garment with a diagonal floral pattern and a knotted sash are visible. It wears robes covering both shoulders, and the folds falling regularly in semicircles from beneath the chest lack volume but form flowing, graceful lines. Beneath the hem of the upper garment, which falls in rounded semicircles, the feet are spread apart on either side, and the toes are rendered with great delicacy. Characteristic features include a well-balanced body, a squarish, angular face, robes covering both shoulders, and a cylindrical crown carved with a vine-scroll pattern. In particular, the ornate, patterned cylindrical crown and the form of the robe covering both shoulders are characteristic of early Goryeo stone images, providing a basis for estimating the date of production. Despite being a shallow line engraving of only about 5 mm in depth, the rock-carved image on Soraesan Mountain, Siheung, is in good condition, and is a refined work distinguished by superior technique and outstanding pictorial expression.
