Arched Bridge of Yuksongjeong Pavilion, Goseong
고성 육송정 홍교 · 高城 六松亭 虹橋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis bridge lies on the boundary between Haesang-ri and Tapyeon-ri in Ganseong-eup, Goseong County. It spans a stream about 12.3 m wide, with stone embankments built up and a bridge 10.6 m long laid across them. The foundation of the arch makes good use of the natural terrain: on the east side, the natural bedrock (1.7 m high) is used as it stands, with a single course of foundation stones (30 cm high), made of long dressed stones similar in size to the arch stones, placed on top of it. On the west side, three courses of foundation stones were built up before the arch was set on top, each course made by joining two long dressed stones. The height of the lowest course on the west side cannot be determined precisely, as it is buried, but the second course is 70 cm high and the third is 60 cm high, both very substantial. The exact date of construction is unknown, but since the bridge collapsed together with Neungpagyo Bridge in the great flood of the eulchuk year (1745), it is presumed to have been built around the same time as Neungpagyo Bridge (1704). The Ganseong-gun eupji, a gazetteer of Ganseong County compiled in 1748, records that the date of construction of the Yuksongjeong arched bridge was already unknown at that time, raising the possibility that it is in fact older than Neungpagyo Bridge. This is a single-span arched stone bridge that makes skilful use of the natural terrain. It is well preserved and is regarded as a fine example of the elegant craftsmanship of Joseon-period stone bridges.
